Girls College Quetta Witnesses Another Agitation Day

Quetta, April 03rd, 2010: Students of Government Girls Degree College Quetta called off their two-day long agitation after constitution of an inquiry committee by the government to probe into the alleged molestation of a girl student by the driver of the college principal.

According to Balochistan education minister Tahir Mehmood Khan the committee will be headed by provincial minister for prosecution Rahila Hameed Durrani and comprise city elites, provincial ministers and education department officials.

He also announced the closure of the college for four days. He said the Principal's driver has been suspended from service with immediate effect.

Earlier, the students gathered inside the college near its main gate and protested for the second day against what they call the non-suspension of the driver from service and non-formation of the inquiry committee to sort out the issue. They chanted slogans against the college administration and demanded access of media personnel to college premises to cover their agitation. Police did not allow the media teams to enter the college premises to cover the student's protest.

It is worth mentioning that the college students staged a protest inside their institution on Friday afternoon against what they say the misbehaviour of the college principal's driver with a girl student. The students say the driver had grabbed the girl by her collar and dragged her to the principal's office when she hit the principal's car with her foot after being snubbed by the principal in her office for carrying an MP-3 player in the college.

The protesting students also called out their male family members who rushed to the college and staged protest by blocking the main road in front of the college and burning tyres demanding action against the accused.

The issue was, however, resolved after mediation of the provincial education minister between the college administration and students' parents on the assurance that the driver would be suspended and a committee would be formed to investigate into the matter.

Ethnic Diversity

QUETTA, March 23rd, 2010: Quetta is one of the largest cities in Pakistan.  Quetta city is located in the north west of Pakistan and it is been a gate way to the North Afghanistan and the West Iran. The city is different from the most cities in Pakistan. Quetta is the most urban capital of Balochistan, Pakistan. Balochistan province is considered the richest province of Pakistan with natural resources and minerals, but with lack of extreme literacy and infrastructure. In 1838, British had brought thousand of ethnic Hazara’s from Afghanistan as manpower to have built the British India train track to Afghanistan. The natural feature of Hazara people who lives in Quetta city is not in most watch able due to different race that is oriental. However frequently, the Hazara community face congregation in certain parts of settlements. Quetta has very high scale of separation with many ethnic outlines from language, race and religion differences. Quetta is divided into four zones where many ethnic minorities from Christian, Hindu, Iranian, Afghan and Hazaras are living. Each ethnic group has certain ways of living and believes. The entire city is either ‘Shia’ or ‘sunni’. There areas are segregated by a certain appearance some with long beard and some in short. The difference between ‘Shia’ and ‘Sunni’ can be easily distinguished due to there typical appearances, attitude and names that makes obvious differences. The concept and thoughts of religious believes, and school of thoughts is a clear identity for these ethnic groups living in Quetta city, but Hazaras who are the decedent of Afghanistan migrated in 1838, to Pakistan has an enthralling feature of an oriental look and yellow skin amongst other inhabitant living in Pakistan. Our race is pure Chinnes and religion was a pure Buddhist that had been carried out until we accepted Islam long after 711 AD. We are not only discriminated by the majority but also killed subject to religion and race. Despite being ethnic line, our nation still stands qualified in majority amongst other natives. Hazara’s population in Quetta city is almost 400000, out of 2.5 million inhabitants. There are Baloch, Pashtoon and Punjabi’s who are in majority and Hazara stands segregated along ethnic row. But in education field Hazara plays a leading role by devoting there skills, services in all field from high rank governmental officials, army to commercial line.  Hazaras moved to Quetta Pakistan with intense shocked from Afghanistan’s king Abdul Reham brutal punishment, torture and hang to death from 1838 till 1900 and onward. His rule is well remembered for his savagery and bloody suppression of revolts, specially for massacring sixty percent of Hazara ethnic groups. After migration to Quetta Pakistan, our forefather’s have struggled hard to establish themselves for new life and place that is Quetta city. This hard line differences and suffering have awakened our ancestors mind to focus in education and nothing else. They worked hard in the field of labouring but let their children to have access to education that they thought is, their basic right and this shall be their key to success. Besides being suffering from deep turmoil from harsh circumstances they continued their effort on focusing in education so as, I and every Hazara exclusive or/and individually. Our secret in success is only education that today we stands the most competitive to hold on high rank seats in the government department as well as the most successful business man in commercial sector.

TALIBANISATION OF QUETTA

QUETTA, March 20th, 2010: ALTHOUGH insurgency in Balochistan dominates the political front and media attention, there is another alarming reality which has been ignored and denied by the provincial and the federal government. This is Talibanisation of Balochistan, particularly of Quetta and northern Balochistan.

Major cases of recent targeted killings in Quetta and abductions for ransom are directly linked with jihadi outfits and the Taliban who have natural and cultural en mity with nationalist Pakhtoons and Baloch, including the Hazara tribe.

Quetta continues to witness substantial militant activity, both from Islamist extremists and Baloch nationalists. There were 73 militancy-related incidents in Quetta during 2009 (till Nov 15) as against 81 in 2008; 72 in 2007; 75 in 2006; 61 in 2005; 51 in 2004; and 32 in 2003.

After 2001, Quetta witnessed a sharp increase of land encroach ment by the Taliban who fled Afghanistan after 2001 US attacks. There are several no-go areas in Quetta and Balochistan, used by the Taliban as launching pads.
As for the Quetta regional military shura, it directs activities in southern and western Afghanistan. It is currently led by Hafez Majid.

The shura is using no-go areas like Kharotabad, Pakhtoonabad, Kakar Colony and recently developed areas of eastern and western bypasses in Quetta for their operations.

After the recent operations in Helmand, a heavy influx of highprofile Taliban leaders and refugees has moved to Quetta. This has resulted in the increase of property prices and rent. It is time all illegally occupied government territories were vacated.

Modern housing schemes should be developed on those lands, and no-go areas must be opened and action should be launched against all militant groups.

The eastern bypass of Quetta city must be regained by the government and developed as an industrial-cum-educational zone for the rapidly growing population of Quetta.

Strict measures need to be taken to regulate businesses, labour laws, housing and property to discourage notorious groups to use Quetta as a soft target for their activities. M. POPALZAI & SHARIF KASI Quetta.

A great leader of a small party

QUETTA, January 28th, 2010: A nation's history acts like a mirror which shows that particular nation its past mistakes with the aim not to commit it again in future. Hazaras have also a dynamic history which provides us with the accounts of our nation's achievements. A nation's leader must have two qualities - wisdom and braveness - as according to Hazrat Ali (A.S) and Hazaras are proud to have had a leader with both these qualities who is, however, no more in this world, but is still remembered with great reverence. That personality is no one, but the deceased chairman of Hazara Democratic Party, Hussain Ali Yousafi.

Today's world calls for a who could is not only devoted and dedicated to his nation's cause, but has also the wit and prudence required to identify the actual problems of the nation and to address them properly. Yousafi was a leader who fulfilled these criteria. He always talked about Hazara's unity and urged them to get education saying that it was the only source through which Hazaras could get their legitimate rights which had been usurped by powerful forces. For his purpose, he made great efforts to get the literacy rate enhanced in Hazara society.

A nation is identified in the world by its culture and it is an established fact that the nations which preserved their culture have also stood top in the world. Hazaras are one the same nations of the world who have a rich culture in Afghanistan. Although many Afghan rulers made their utmost to bring the Hazaragi culture and civilization to an end through their extra-ordinary atrocities and bestial attitude towards Hazaras they failed in their attempt. This was because of Hazaras' love for their culture and tradition which foiled all the bids to finish them out as a nation. Yousafi was one of those zealous and enthusiastic hazaras who had a vision for Hazaragi culture, tradition and language.

He got his education in a multi-cultural society of Quetta but he never compromised on his cultural way of life.  He always tried to promote Hazaragi culture and language and persuaded the people to get back to their culture and mother tongue, because he deemed that hazaras' culture and language have a significant importance in their life.

Yousafi had a pragmatic approach towards life who, being chairman of HDP, successfully tried to sort out problem being faced by Hazaras in Quetta. He was an optimistic person who never got disappointed by the odd circumstances confronting Hazaras in Quetta. He was quite sure about a bright future of Hazara people in Pakistan despite all discriminations and prejudices being carried out against them.

He always condemned military operations in Balochistan because he had a perception that all the problems might be solved through political dialogues. He kept a wide berth with politics in last years of his life, but spared due time for promotion of Hazaragi dramas and poetry. He was rhetoric having a marvelous sense of humour which he also displayed in his dramas, poetry and speeches.

French bakery offers future to Afghan minority children

KABUL, January 05th, 2010: KABUL: On the wall of Le Pelican cafe in Kabul’s dusty suburbs are photographs showing a baker’s dozen of Afghan children beaming over a tray of pastries fresh out of the huge industrial oven behind them.

Nearby shelves are stacked with their wares – croissants, pains au chocolat, baguettes, apple and peach tarts and turnovers, sugar cookies, a variety of breads – which teenagers Habib and Zahir carefully put in paper bags for enthusiastic customers.

In a city that has little trace of the sophistication of its past, Le Pelican Boulanger is more than just a welcome oasis for an expatriate community living and working as if under siege.

The cafe is an outlet for what its French owners, Jacques and Ariane Hiriart, have built from scratch to educate children from Afghanistan’s ethnic Hazara community, who have long suffered discrimination and exclusion.

At the Hiriart’s vocational centre in Kabul’s south-eastern suburbs, almost 200 Hazaras – not all of them children – learn to read and write before they take on the task of turning out fine French pastries and breads.

The aim is to give them skills they can use to find jobs in the hospitality industry, said Jacques, though he concedes the day Afghanistan welcomes tourists from across the world is probably a long way off.

Many of the children at Le Pelican child care centre “just knock on the door”, said Ariane, or she hears about them by word of mouth and invites them to come and learn.

While most are children, Hazara women also come to learn to read and write, she said, adding the youngest at the centre is six and the oldest 32 years old.

On the vocational side, however, it is still early days for the Hazara boys learning to make bread and hoping the skills will help them find future work.

“Everyone is still very young, and there are not so many hotels here so it is difficult for them to find good work,” Jacques told AFP, sitting over a hot chocolate in a sunny alcove of Le Pelican as one of three cats dozed on the next chair.

Jacques, 61, and Ariane have a long association with Afghanistan, having first worked in Kabul for a Swiss non-governmental organisation in 2000, while the brutal and extremist Taliban was still in control.

Under the Taliban regime the discrimination long suffered by the Hazara – believed to be descendants of the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan and his sons who swept across Central Asia in the 13th century – had become even worse. The few NGOs in the country were not permitted to work with them.

After the 9/11 Al Qaeda attacks on the United States, the couple were on the last evacuation flight to leave Kabul two days later.

Within a month, the Taliban had been pushed from power in a US-led invasion, and not long afterwards the Hiriarts returned to Kabul “to do what we really wanted to do – to take care of what we considered the most vulnerable people, Hazara children”, Ariane said.

Years earlier, after the death of their only child at age 10, the couple had decided to change their lives, she said.

In 1986, Jacques ended his 12-year career as an oil rig engineer to retrain as a baker, learning l’art de la patisserie with a vague plan of moving abroad and starting a new life.

After running a successful boulangerie in eastern France for 10 years, they were inspired by French writer Joseph Kessel’s book “On the Horsemen’s Steps”, about the traditional Central Asian mounted game of buzkashi.

“This was our inspiration, as it was for many French people, to come to Afghanistan,” said Jacques. “So we joined KABUL: Boys from Afghanistan’s Hazara minority group learn to make French bread and pastries at the Le Pelican café.—AFP

an NGO but it was not satisfying – what was missing was contact with the population.

“I’m not really interested in doing the sort of work that means you sit behind your computer and never see what is happening outside, that is very sad. Most important for us is the contact with the local people.”

As their plans took shape, they found help in odd corners – for instance, the bread oven at their centre was brought into Afghanistan by the French military, fighting with the US and Nato to quell a Taliban insurgency.

“We had our first customer on Sept 12, 2006, the day of my birthday,” he said, searching for the bill on his laptop. “We sold croissants, pains au chocolat and hamburger buns.” Annual operating costs are 120,000 dollars, said Jacques, adding that the cafe and sales of the bakery products had made 12,000 dollars since April 2009.

They rely on private donations and keep a low profile, not wishing to draw attention in a country ranked by the international watchdog Transparency International as the world’s second most corrupt, after Somalia.

Unlike many foreigners with businesses in Afghanistan, the Hiriarts refuse to pay bribes to stay open, believing they are setting an example to their trainees.

For now, however, they believe they have reached a plateau and that to take their concept further they need help – preferably from another couple who will be able to run the cafe and bakery while they develop the centre.

“We are searching, but it is not easy. Not many people like us want to come to Afghanistan,” said Jacques.—AFP

Hazaras Target Killing and The Baloch Perspective

QUETTA, December 05th, 2009: Shia people in general and Hazara community in particular are facing an intensified series of targetted killings of their members in Quetta for the last several months. Though the history of target killings of ethnic Hazaras in Quetta dates back to October 1999 when the then Balochistan minister for education and eminent Hazara leader, Sardar Nisar Ali, was targetted and injured near Balochistan High Court, the attacks, however, saw a rampant increase in 2009 when Hazara community members were frequently targeted and killed within little span of time.

It is an established fact that most of the Hazaras blame the Baloch for these killings as almost all the accused nominated in these cases have, unfortunately, been identified as Baloch by caste. It is better to note here that these accused are mainly Brahvi not Baloch, but most of the Hazara people do not differentiate between the two and consider them simply as Baloch. Moreover, the expedient silence of the Baloch nationalist parties over these gruesome killings have further strengthened the Hazaras' belief that Baloch are behind these killings.

To clarify the misconception among Hazaras about the involvement of Baloch as a nationality in their target killings and to apprise them of Baloch intellectuals' stance on these sectarian killings, the following piece of writing is being published on our website. This has been written by a Baloch journalist and published in the first Baloch online newspaper - the Baloch Hal - as editorial on December 4, 2009. This newspaper has recently been launched with one of the most talented Baloch journalist, Malik Siraj Akbar, as its editor-in-chief. The paper highlights the Baloch views and perspectives on various issues confronting Balochistan and the Baloch people.

Regards,

Hazaranation.com Team.

Editorial: Sectarianism: A threat to secular Balochistan

QUETTA, December 05th, 2009: It is very unfortunate that the Baloch and Pashtun populations living in Balochistan have never taken sectarianism as a major threat faced by Balochistan. The reason for this indifferent attitude is unambiguous as both Balochs and Pashtuns follow Sunni sect of Islam. Therefore, they have hardly lost any precious lives in what has become a two-decade old war of sectarianism being fought in the streets of Quetta. Worst still, no Chief Minister of Governor of Balochistan ever prioritized this alarmingly increasing trend as a concerning issue to be addressed at once at the official level. Hence, today sectarian violence has emerged as the monster of all times for Balochistan, mainly its capital city, Quetta, and its neighboring districts.

In a fresh appalling case of sectarian killings, two boys belonging to the Hazara-Shia community of Quetta were target killed in Pir Ghaib area of Bolan district in the neighborhood of Quetta city. The shootings in Bolan also left two other persons injured who were also a part of the same group that that gone to Bolan to have picnic after the Eid, a very popular and widespread trend among the youth of Balochistan.

This particular case of target killing merits attention for the reason that it highlights the aggressive approach of the religious fanatics who are determined to leave no stone unturned to kill the members of the Shia sect. As the law of the land fails to apprehend the masterminds of sectarian killings, gallant attackers have now even made inroads in popular picnic points too. By doing this, they remarkably succeed in the generating panic and fear among the people of the Hazara-Shia communities. They want to restrict the movement of Shia community and force them to stop sending their children to go to schools, playgrounds or picnic points.

Over the past many years, Quetta has witnessed extremely horrible cases of sectarian killings which claimed lives of hundreds of people belonging to the Hazara (majority of the Hazaras are Shia) and Shia (all Shias are not Hazara) communities. Year 2009 has seen the resurgence of target killings on the sectarian basis. This cycle of target killing has not been confined to the clerics of the opposite sect only. The religious hooligans have also murdered very progressive and democratic professionals such as Hussain Ali Yousafi, the chairman of the Hazara Democratic Party (HDP).

The police department has utterly failed to bring the masterminds of sectarianism to book. After all, it is no skeleton in cupboard that sectarianism was patronized and promoted as an unfortunate state policy during the military regime of General Zia-ul-Haq. Similarly, there is no question about the sectarian groups operating without some covert assistance from influential quarters in power.

In spite of mistreatment, the Hazaras as well as the Shias have exhibited unmatched patience while responding to these cases of target killings. They never resorted to violence despite instigations from certain sections of society that offered them weapons and all other support to take revenge. The Hazara Democratic Party has been a vocal detractor of the country’s military establishment and its policies in Balochistan. The Hazaras have time and again publicly condemned the target killing of Baloch leadership, disappearance of the Baloch political workers and the operation in Baloch areas.

It is indeed true that in a city like Quetta all major ethnic communities remain a permanent state of stiff competition. In what seems like a cold war, ethnic communities in such societies view the others as a “threat” to their demography and representation in different government departments. Attainment of new job and promotion to a higher rank is often analyzed on the ethnic lines. Thus, there has been a love and hate relationship between different ethnic communities in Balochistan.

Nevertheless, growing sectarianism should give a wake-up call to Baloch nationalists. It is sad but true at the same time that majority of the young men who are operating for these sectarian groups, like the Lashkar-e-Jhanggi, belong to Bravi speaking Baloch families. While the Baloch nationalist movement has always been secular, progressive and inclined towards Marxism, increasing radicalization of the Baloch youth should caution the Baloch nationalist leaders. This could cause an irreparable damage to the whole Baloch nationalist movement.

True, sectarianism is the headache of Quetta’s Hazaras and Shias for the time being. But Balochs cannot overlook the matter that simply and naively. They should take a leaf out of Pashutns’ book where Taliban and religious fanatics ruined the progressive Pashtun society. Once underestimated, the Pashtun mullah has today pointed his guns towards the secular Pashtun nationalist leaders, creative artists and liberal intellectuals. Hence, the Baloch children killing Hazaras on the name of religion could one day turn out to be the “Baloch-Taliban”. Then, their prime target would no longer be the Hazara but the “communist-secular-Kafir Baloch”. That is the gruesome lesson history teaches us.

We recommend all the progressive people of Balochistan to join hands not only to express solidarity with the victims of sectarian killings but also to reach consensus that sectarianism and religious extremism area serious threats that are bent upon eradicating the roots of progressive Baloch, Pashtun and Hazara cultures. This is a scourge that needs to be fought collectively for the future generations of Balochistan, the land of progressive and secular people.

Two More Hazara Youths Killed in Bolan District

QUETTA, December 03rd, 2009: In yet another incident of incessant targeted killings of Hazara community, two youngsters were shot dead and two others wounded at the awesome mountain resort of Peer Ghaib, some 63 kilometers east of the provincial capital of Balochistan in Bolan district. All the victims belong to Hazara Town area of Quetta city.

According to police four Hazara youths including Abdul Ali, Mohammad Musa, Mohammad Latif and Syed Mustafa hired a taxi from Quetta and headed to Peer Ghaib to enjoy their Eid holidays on Wednesday (Dec 2, 2009). They were enjoying themselves at the resort when unknown armed assailants opened indiscriminate fire on them.

Resultantly, Mohammad Latif and Syed Mustafa died on the spot while Abdul Ali and Mohammad Musa received multiple bullet injuries. The bodies and the injured were later taken to Mach civil hospital wherefrom they were shifted to Quetta.

It is worth mentioning that the bodies lay there on the spot for several hours and none of the law enforcement personnel or district government officials bothered to reach the site and shift them to hospital. These brutal dual murders also pose a question mark to the efficiency and performance of the local administration for which they must be taken into account.

Dawood Agha also blamed the provincial chief minister Nawab Aslam Raisani, Anti Terrorist Force's head Amir Khan Mandokhel and other law enforcement agencies for allegedly backing the culprits involved in target killings of the Hazaras.

He also complained against the silence of other communities living in Quetta over killings of the Hazaras.

Criticizing the poor performance of police and Frontier Corps, he said these law enforcement agencies are now asking the people to manage for their own security. Hazaras Target Killings in Quetta?

QUETTA, OctobEr 12th, 2009: Yet another notable of Hazara tribe was gunned down in Quetta within ten days of the brutal murder of senior lawyer Walayat Hussain. According to police, unknown terrorists have shot dead a senior official of Balochistan mines and mineral department in a latest incident of the ongoing target killings of the Hazara community members in the provincial capital of Balochistan.

Mohammad Ashraf, the chief inspector mines Balochistan, was targeted near his officer on Sariab road Monday morning. He was on his way to office from his home in his official vehicle when the terrorists, according to police, riding a motorcycle opened fire on him.

Police say Ashraf received multiple bullet injuries and died on the spot. His body was shifted to civil hospital where a large number of Hazara community members gathered after receiving the sad news and chanted slogans against the provincial administration.

It is quite interesting that every time the killers easily manage to escape after committing the crime despite heavy deployment of security personnel across the city. The unscathed escape of the killers implies either the security agencies are also involved in these killings of the innocent Hazara community members or they are inefficient enough to catch the terrorists.

Another amazing thing to take notice of is how do the terrorists communicate with each other without being bugged by the intelligence agencies? The intelligence agencies have latest equipments to record the conversations among people, as they mostly do in case of journalists, but amazingly here in case of the target killings of the Hazara people all their equipments fail to function properly to help them trace the culprits.

A new trend has also been observed in target killings of ethnic Hazaras in Quetta over the past one month that the killers are now targeting only those members of the community who occupy some important positions in society or posts in government institutions. This is a dangerous trend as it is aimed at eliminating the high-profile personalities of the aggrieved community to make it completely helpless and unheard of in various important forums. The cold-blooded murder of Hussain Ali Yousafi, Syed Talib Agha, Engineer Ahmed Ali Najafi, Walayat Hussain Advocate and now Mohammad Ashraf shows the same trend.

Whatever is the reason behind the killings of Hazara people in Quetta, one thing is understood and quite clear that this is happening in collusion with the government and its law enforcement agencies, perhaps as part of some international game which is being played here in this region of the South Asia.

Never in the history of Pakistan, had the Hazara community ever faced such a critical and crucial situation which they are facing today. It is never too late to mend, the Hazara community elders need to sit together while shunning their petty differences and individual thinking to evolve a strategy to cope with this situation else the upcoming generation would never forgive them.

And last not least, the criminal silence of Jan Ali Changezi and Syed Abbas, the two legislators of the Hazara community in the provincial and national assembly respectively, over the frequent target killings of Hazara community member’s calls for their immediate accountability by the Hazara nation. Their role in preventing the target killings in Quetta is nothing more than presenting a resolution in the parliament and seeking Fatiha for the departed souls of the community members being murdered in the target killing incidents. It seems as if the Hazara community had voted them just for doing lip service and seeking Fatiha for their notables in the national or provincial assemblies. It is really a matter of shame for both Syed Abass and Jan Ali Changezi.

EDITORIAL: GROWING ASSASSINATIONS OF TOP PERSONALITIES OF HAZARAS IN QUETTA

QUETTA, October 05th, 2009: Yet another assassination visited Quetta in which a top lawyer of Hazara tribe has fallen victim on Thursday evening. The crime of the victim, Walayat Hussain Advocate, was that he belonged to peaceful Hazara ethnic nation, the third major ethnic after Baloch and Pashtoon, living in Balochistan for centuries. The grim incident took place about a month later of assassination of great philanthropist and trader Ahmed Ali Najafi Hazara. Both the killings are together grim marker as they were fallen victims in busy crowded area where people walk touching shoulder to shoulder with each other and assailant terrorists escaped from crime scenes of both merciless incidents in Quetta.

What raise three questions in sound minds about such growing terrorism are included; first, is the state’s flawed strategy as mere deployment of Frontier Corps, paramilitary forces, is not the solution to halt brutal attacking on Hazaras’ precious lives in Quetta. Ahmed Ali Najafi and Walayat Hussain Advocate have been killed inhumanly during the days when FC were deployed in the city. Second, the state should not extend its excuse by mere titling such terrorism against Hazaras as targeted killing which cannot be only sectarian in nature, but involvements of other hands such as to that of different land, property and business mafia could not be ruled out in such incidents. And, third, why the state does not carry out impartial judicial investigation into such assassinations of Hazaras’ top personalities including Shaheed Hussain Ali Yousafi, Ahmed Ali Najafi and now senior lawyer Walayat Hussain Advocate.

It is the sole responsibility of the state and its subsidiaries to ensure protection to life and property of its citizens as enunciated in the Constitution-1973, the supreme law of the land. Undoubtedly, the state has so far failed to do its this prime job effectively and it is demoralizing and frightening for the people, particularly for peace-loving Hazaras, when the state seems unable to prosecute and punish those involved in acts of terrorism against pen-loving Hazaras in Quetta.

There lies no question that religious chauvinism has become rampant against minority communities in the country. But, in case of Quetta, the state should not term terrorism against Hazaras as only targeted killing or sectarian in nature and issuing mere condemnation statements of such heinous acts of terrorism against Hazara tribesmen, who have increasingly and repeatedly been fallen victims during the recent years in the city. The state should initiate impartial judicial inquiry into assassinations of Hussain Ali Yousafi, Ahmed Ali Najafi and senior lawyer Walayat Hussain Advocate. It is hoped that such judicial investigation would unearth and reveal the reasons behind the growing killings of Hazaras that what kinds of hands and mafia are involved as these are not mere targeted killings of sectarianism only. Then, those who are involved behind such inhuman acts of terrorism against Hazaras should be brought to justice. Only effective prosecution would serve as deterrent to future attacks of this nature. The people of all tribes living for centuries in Quetta must also learn to adhere to the law and demonstrate self-restraint as they have been living during the last centuries in environment of peace and brotherhood in the city.

renowned philanthropist engineer Ahmed Najafi laid to rest amid grief, anger

QUETTA, September 08th, 2009: Renowned slain businessman and philanthropist, Engineer Ahmed Ali Najafi, who was fallen martyr by unknown savage terrorists on Monday, was laid to eternal rest amid extreme grief, sorrow and anger at Hazara Graveyard on Tuesday, in Quetta, targeted-killing-stricken provincial capital of Balochistan.

Eminent businessman and trader, Engineer Ahmed Ali Najafi, was assassinated when two inhuman terrorists on a motorcycle, one of them riding while the other sitting on back seat opened indiscriminate firing at him here on Sirki Road near his famous furniture factory, known as Noorban Wood Factory, according to media reports quoting police officials as saying.

He received severe multiple bullet wounds from closed range and one the bullets parched into his heart which caused his instant dead, a local media quoting civil hospital doctors and police officials as said.

The perpetrators after targeting Ahmed Najafi fled from the scene, a five-minute walking distance from Industrial police station.

On Monday, his body was shifted to CMH, located in neat cantonment area of Quetta, at its mortuary as the slain’s closed relatives were due in Quetta on Tuesday to attend his funeral rite.

On Tuesday, thousands of grieved Hazara mourners, belonging to various walks of life, took body of the martyred businessman Ahmed Najafi from Imambargah Nichari Hazara, located on Alamdar Road, and buried him at Hazara Graveyard amid sorrow. Apart from Hazara mourners, people of other communities also attended the funeral procession of Najafi and his subsequent funeral prayer.

The aggrieved participants of the funeral procession of the renowned philanthropist chanted slogans against the government for its failure to provide protection to life and property of its citizens in Quetta, the targeted-killing-ridden provincial capital of Balochistan.

The enraged mourners also carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans against sectarian terrorism, targeted killings and fulminated against the administration for failing to bring to halt the intermittent targeted killings of innocent and peaceful Hazara citizens in the city.

Placards reflected hatred of the peace-loving Hazara tribe against sectarian terrorism and targeted killings of innocent and non-combatant citizens in the city. A placard crossed with red color on the on word, terrorism, reflected minds of the peace-adoring people of Hazara’s, dwelling in Quetta.

Reaching at Hazara Graveyard, the funeral procession turned into grand public protesting meeting where trader and political leaders addressed the mourning gathering.
Speaking on the occasion, Abdul Khaliq Hazara, General Secretary of Hazara Democratic Party-HDP, the sole political party representing Hazara’s in Pakistan, condemned the assassination of Ahmed Najafi in the strongest possible term.

He said that peaceful Hazara ethnic nation would never be demoralized by such acts of inhuman terrorism and killing of innocent Hazara’s in the city.

He highlighted the massive contribution of educated Hazara’s in the development of Balochistan and Pakistan, and said that brave Hazara’s were playing pivotal role in prevailing political scenario of Balochistan along with other political forces for establishing piece and prosperity in the province.

Breaking the decades old tradition of tribal Hazara where women cannot face to address protesting gathering, Rukhsana Ahmed Ali, widow of Shaheed Engineer Ahmed Najafi, earned the honour to become the first Hazara lady who addressed for the first time any protesting gathering as his husband was fallen martyr a day earlier.

During her logical speech, tears were rolling down on many chicks of the protesters at the gathering and emotional scenes were observed at the Graveyard.

Rukhsana, president of women wing of PPP Balochistan, who braved martyrdom of her beloved husband, deplored the lacking of political consciousness among Hazara ladies in the city.

“We should encourage our women to get political consciousness and awareness, and take part in the political activities,” she appealed sympathetically and sincerely.

Prominent among those who addressed the gathering included; Asghar Gulzari, Tahir Nazari and other speakers who urged the Hazara tribe to forge unity among their ranks and lend hand of cooperation to each other for coping with the challenges of unstopping targeted terrorism under which the innocent Hazara citizens had being fallen victims during the recent years in the city.

All shops and businesses remained shut on Alamdar Road and other Hazara dominated areas as protest to condemn the merciless assassination of seasoned trader Ahmed Najafi on Tuesday in the provincial capital of Balochistan.

QUETTA, September 07th, 2009: In interval row of targeted killings of peaceful Hazara people in Quetta, renowned trader, Engineer Ahmed Ali Najafi, was assassinated mercilessly in an apparently sectarian terrorism when two inhuman terrorists opened indiscriminate firing at him, on Sirki Road, in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan, media reports quoting police officials as said.

Engineer Ahmed Ali Najafi, a widely-known philanthropist and eminent trader, was going in his vehicle to his famous furniture manufacturing factory, Noorban Wood Factory. When he reached near his factory, two unknown savage fanatic terrorists on a motorcycle one of them ride while the other sitting on back seat opened indiscriminate firing at him here on Sirki Road near his famous furniture factory, known as Noorban Wood Factory, at 9:10am, local Pakistan Summer Time, according to media reports quoting police officials as saying.

He received serious multiple bullet wounds from a closed range and one the bullets parched into his heart which caused his dead instantly, a local media quoting hospital doctors and police officials as said.

The perpetrators after targeting Ahmed Najafi succeeded in fleeing from the scene, a five-minute walking distance from Industrial police station, despite towering claims of the incumbent government of deploying Frontier Corps personnel for bringing to halt the targeted killings in the city.

Later, his body was shifted to Combined Military Hospital-CMH, located in military cantonment, at its mortuary as the slain closed relatives are due in Quetta on Tuesday to attend his funeral rite.

Industrial police station officials had registered a case of premeditated murder against unidentified murderers as legal formality as done usual in the previous merciless incidents of targeted killings of Hazara’s in the city.

Deplorably, dozens of peaceful Hazara’s have been fallen victims of brutal targeted killings in the year 2009, the worst tragic year for innocent Hazara’s in Quetta, but no terrorist has so far been held and brought to justice.
